Natural latex offers comfortable and ergonomic support through its resilience and elasticity. Free from harmful chemicals and sustainably produced. And that benefits your sleep quality and health!
Natural latex, also known as natural rubber, is a versatile material that is extracted from the latex milk of rubber trees, mainly Hevea Brasiliensis. Latex has been known for centuries and has been used for thousands of years, especially by indigenous peoples in Central and South America, where rubber trees originated.
Processing:
- Harvesting: Latex is harvested by making incisions in the bark of the rubber tree, allowing the latex milk to be tapped.
- Vulcanization: The latex milk is processed into a latex core by a foaming process. Additives such as sulfur, zinc oxide, accelerator and antioxidant are added to speed up the vulcanization process. This process, which would take months in nature, is now completed in a few hours. All ingredients used are non-toxic . The liquid mass is vulcanized at approximately 100°C and then cooled to harden. This is done in large core molds into which the foamed latex milk is poured and "baked".
- Washing and drying: After removing from the mold, the latex core is washed and dried several times. After drying, the cores are checked for hardness.
- Processing: The dried rubber is then processed into mattress cores and pillow fillings.
Benefits of natural latex:
- High point elasticity: Natural latex offers excellent point elasticity which, from an orthopedic point of view, provides good support for the body, resulting in good pressure distribution and a healthy sleeping position.
- Long-lasting, consistent elasticity: Natural latex retains its elasticity over time, ensuring the mattress's comfort and support remain consistent even after prolonged use.
- Free from Harmful Chemicals: Natural latex is free from solvents, CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) and carcinogenic chemicals, making it a safe choice for both your health and the environment.
- Natural resistance to allergens : Natural latex has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it less susceptible to allergens such as dust mites, mold and bacteria.
- Breathability: Natural latex has millions of tiny air chambers that provide excellent ventilation and breathability, making it feel comfortable and cool while you sleep.
- Ecological and sustainable harvesting: Natural latex is harvested manually and in an ecologically responsible manner, preserving the rubber trees and protecting the ecosystem.
- Regenerative Natural Resource: Natural rubber is extracted from rubber trees, a renewable resource, while synthetic rubber is produced from crude oil, a non-renewable resource.
- Lower energy consumption: The production of natural latex requires significantly less energy (about 10-15%) compared to synthetic latex, which contributes to a lower ecological footprint.
Certification:
The mattresses we sell from Dormiente and Green Sleep have a QUL certificate. QUL-certified mattresses contain only pure natural latex without the addition of synthetic materials. Synthetic latex, made from oil, is a man-made variant of natural latex. However, the term 'natural latex' can also be used for blends of natural and synthetic latex, although these are not always purely natural
